Santoriniis situated between the islands of Ios and Anafi. It is a complex of the islands Thira, Thirasia, Aspronisi, volcanoes (PaliaKameni and NeaKameni, where the crater of the volcano is located). Its surface is 76km2 and the length of its beaches is 69km. It is at a distance of 128 nautical miles from the port of Piraeus and 63 nautical miles from Crete. The name Thira comes from the mythical resident Thira from Sparta, while the name Santorini was given to the complex of islands by the Venetians. Thira, Thirasia and Aspronisi are remnants of the prehistoric round island. They surround a deep, cauldron-like sea basin, at the center of which Palia and NeaKameni emerged. This basin is the one called Kaldera. Santorini is the only complex of islands where the residences have not been built at sea level, but on the edges of the internal walls of Kaldera.Kaldera and the whole complex of islands of Santorini have been characterized of special natural beauty. The capital of the island is the Fira, whose name came from the distortion of the word Thira and it has prevailed. In Thira, there are 13 villages and in Thirasia, 3. It is also famous for its golden sunset and from the 1980s until today, thousands of couples worldwide have chosen the island to get married or to spend their honeymoon. The beaches of Santorini are of unparalleled beauty. In the east coasts, the sandy beaches are colored because they were created by volcanic eruptions. The most famous beaches of Santorini, are the Kokkini (Red) and the Aspri (White) Paralia (beach) which are located in Acrotiri, as well as the immense beach with black pebbles, which is extended from the beach of Perivolos,, continues to the beach of Perissa and ends to the beach of Monolithos. It is the well-known MavriParalia (Black beach). The Red, White and Black beach are popular due to their uniqueness. Perissa is situated in the southeast side of the island, at a distance of 1km from Fira. It is well-known for the beach with the black sand. The square of the village is dominated by one of the largest churches of Santorini, the church of the Holy Cross.
