Located at Approx 12 degrees South and 34 degrees East. Know locally and indicated on surveys as Chiwe Hill/Beach. A drive on a major regional road from Lilongwe is approximately 3 hours and 300 km. The nearest town centre is Dwangwa at 30 km. There is an all-weather airstrip at Dwangwa.
Buildings and fixtures
There are 2 buildings on the property. A smaller 2 bedroom guest cottage (approx 100sq mts) with a detached bathroom (flushing toilet, basin and shower). An Owners house of approx 400 sq mts, has 3 large bedrooms and 2 bathrooms (main en suite). A large lounge/kitchen and a family room. The house is completely surrounded with a 4 meter wide covered veranda, giving unobstructed views of lake, beaches and mountains through 360 degrees.
The Owners house is fully plumbed and has both a 220 AC and 12 v Solar system. A septic tank and soak-away system service the bathrooms and waste water.
The 220 AC state line is under construction at the moment.
The property uses fresh water pumped directly from Lake Malawi for domestic and irrigation purposes. A concrete storage tank has a capacity of 8000 litres that would be sufficient to supply further development.
Access
Presently the property is accessed down a 3 km beach from the main M5 lake shore road. The local government is in process of constructing a more permanent road through a swamp wilderness area to the West (approx 3 km long).
Community
Chiwe village is an isolated fishing community of about 30 huts and 200 people. The nearest local centre (health, police and trading shops) is the village of Kasitu.
The original negotiation and agreement between the current owner and the local
community has developed into an extremely successful cooperation and relationship. Security stands out as a true example of this cooperation. Currently Chiwe does not have theft, and all the buildings described, have little or no need for any security devices. The owners interest would wish for this partnership to be maintained and expanded.
Local Points of Interest
Within 50 km of the property there are numerous places of interest and a number of leisure activities. Waterfalls, Golf course, squash, tennis, diving, horse riding and polo-cross, water sports and sailing, hiking, extreme 4x4 trails, mountain biking and the Nkhota'khota wildlife reserve.
The property is ideal for any form of water sport, as it has unrestricted yet safe access to Lake Malawi. Snorkelling off the beach is done in crystal-clear water. Due to the orientation of the property, it provides a very safe and protected anchorage to small to medium sized recreational water craft (30 tons).
Birdlife on and in the vicinity of the property is considered exceptional as both Forest, Wetland and open water species can be found. Presently the bird list stands at 172 species on the property itself.
