The magnificent residence and show place of early Mazatlán’s fabled merchant prince, Senor Antonio Diaz de Leon, is now available. When completed in 1903, this historic “chalet” was the tallest structure in the port city. Its high tower was once an easily recognized landmark for sailing and cruise ships returning to the Bahia anchorage. Today its distinctive silhouette commands the posh streets surrounding the Cathedral Plaza and is waiting for a discerning family to restore it to its rightful place as the most cherished estate home in Mazatlán.

To step past the neoclassical exterior with its carved art deco facades and into the chancel room which allows one a stunning first view of the home interior…is truly a step back in time. The ceilings rise over Venetian Mosaic floors of the most detailed and perfectly cut, pentagon granite tiles you will ever see. And as solid as the day they were painstakingly set by craftsmen from another age.

The old world workmanship throughout the edifice is amazing. Each doorway entrance and window is beautifully arched. Two enormous granite columns rise to the second floor. Curved and carved woods border the stained glass windows from Florence, Spain. Ceilings are wood-lined and inset with delicate filigree wood cuts. Below rises a gently branching stairway. Plus rococo mirrors, Doric Corinthian columns still adorned with traces of gold leaf, a terrace bordered by a striking balustrade, marble topped furniture (Most of which now resides in the Museo de Machado Casa.) and the list goes on. And on.

El Castillo de la Carnaval, or Castle of the Carnaval as it was called, is difficult to portray in words. It must be seen to be appreciated the immense amount of love and money and skill and toil that went into creating and completing this jewel. It can not be recreated, as the artisan skills that built it are lost in the past. It is truly one-of-a-kind. All it needs now is to be brought back to its honored place in the pantheon of Mazatlán’s history as the priceless home of a Prince
