Sosua, located approximately 25 km east of Puerto Plata, and less than 10 km east from Puerto Plata International Airport , is divided into two areas - Los Charamicos (western side) and El Batey (eastern side). Los Charamicos is predominantly occupied by Dominicans who make their living through fishing, tourism jobs or small businesses. El Batey first saw growth in the early 1940's, when an influx of Jewish settlers, escaping Nazi Germany, settled here and developed a dairy industry. Productos Sosua, a producer of dairy products and grocery store chain, is one of the businesses they started that still thrives today. Although many of these settlers moved on, their legacy continues with a small local Jewish community and Synagogue. After this period there was a boom of wealthy Dominicans and Expats whom built beach homes here. The 1970's and 80's saw an influx of tourism to the area, and many hotels, restaurants and shops were built. Over the years since, the town did experience some ups and downs, with pockets of 'sex tourism' earning the area a bit of a seedy reputation. In the last few years, Expats and others who make this town their home, rallied to clean it up and invest in its future. New hotels have been built and tourism has increased to the area. Although the town offers numerous restaurants, bars, activities and 5 beaches to choose from, it's Sosua Beach that amazes most of its visitors. This 1/2 km of beach has beautiful soft, white sand, clear turquoise waters, and sits sheltered in a small cove surrounded by amazing high coral cliffs. Just behind the beach there are plenty of souvenir shops and restaurants vying for your business. This is also where most snorkeling and diving tours depart from.

Cabarete, located approximately 40 km east of Puerto Plata and 20 km east of the POP Airport, is a charismatic little beach town that attracts sports enthusiasts and sun worshippers from all over the world. Until the late 1980's, this town was not much of a town at all, but a vacation area for a few Dominicans from Moca and Santiago. A couple of foreigners discovered the ideal windsurfing conditions in Cabarete Bay, and this secret spot didn't stay secret very long. Since the late 80's the town has hosted both professional and amateur international windsurfing competitions. In 2000, kiteboarding started to take off, and the town has hosted international professional competitions every year since. Cabarete is considered by many to be one of the top places in the world to windsurf and kiteboard, but that's not all that can be done here. You can surf, mountain bike, horseback ride, go canyoning, and take part in so many other adventures, or just simply enjoy the fun in the sun to be found here.

San Felipe de Puerto Plata, often referred to as simply Puerto Plata, is the capital of the Dominican province Puerto Plata. It has a population of 130,000.
The city is famous for resorts such as Playa Dorada and Costa Dorada, located east of San Felipe de Puerto Plata. There are a total of 100,000 hotel beds in the city.
The only aerial tramway in the Caribbean is located in Puerto Plata. With it, one can ride up to Pico Isabel de Torres, a 793 meter high mountain within the city. The top of the mountain features a botanical garden and a replica of Christ the Redeemer, the famous statue in Rio de Janeiro.
The fortification Fortaleza San Felipe, which was built in the 16th century and served as a prison under Rafael Trujillo's dictatorship, lies close to the port of Puerta Plata. The amber museum is also a well-known attraction in this city. La Isabela, a settlement built by Christopher Columbus, is located near Puerto Plata.
