Another curious detail of this city is the existence, in the vicinity, of a reddish rock, the famous Grés de Silves, a rock that was used in the construction of its castle which, for this very reason, has red tones that give it a very peculiar and different aspect from the rest of Portugal's castles.

In Silves there is a lot to discover. One of them is the Old Bridge over the Arade River, which today has only pedestrian access. Despite its name, the ancient viaduct is probably of medieval origin. It's a beautiful characteristic motif for a souvenir photo; In addition, from the bridge there is a picturesque panorama over the river and the castle.

It is recommended to leave the car in the parking lot by the Arade River and discover the alleys on foot. However, in the summer heat the road to the upper part of the city is steep and strenuous; Still, it's worth it.

The Archaeological Museum in Town Hall Square has a wide variety of pieces on display, which tell the complex and diverse history of this ancient city and its surroundings. The Cathedral of Silves with its large churchyard was built on the foundations of the old Mosque. This historic building is worth seeing and reminds us that, until 1577, Silves was the seat of the Bishop of the Algarve.

The Castle of Silves, built between the ninth and twelfth centuries, is not only the emblematic monument of the city, but one of the most important buildings from the times of the Arab occupation in the entire Algarve.
