Franca do Campo São Miguel is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of Vila Franca do Campo, with 19.47 km² of area and 2,659 inhabitants (2011). The population density is 136.6 inhabitants per km².
It is the most important parish of the municipality, where most of the services, commerce and the town hall are located.
Shortly after arriving on the island of São Miguel, some of the first settlers came to settle in this place, which seemed favorable to them due to the fertile aspect of its lands and its easy access to the sea. They called Vila Franca do Campo the nascent village, because it is located in a flat and extensive "field" and because it is "frank" of rights. According to the story, it was its founder Gonçalo Vaz Botelho, who settled here in the middle of the century. XV. - REF: 326/M/03462
