The parish of Povoação, where the first settlers of the island of São Miguel set foot and where the county seat is located, is the largest and most populous in the municipality with 2,161 inhabitants. It is also made up of the center, the surroundings Commission and Morro the Lombas do Cavaleiro, Carro, Button, Orchard and Pós.
The festivities in honour of the patron saint, Our Lady Mother of God, which take place on the first weekend of September, and the festivities in honour of Corpus Christi are one of the highlights of this first village. It is at these times of the year that many emigrants visit the land to spend the holidays with their families.
Of the must-visit tourist attractions, the Municipal Garden, the churches of Our Lady Mother of God and Our Lady of the Rosary, the latter classified as a building of public interest, for being the first parish church on the island of São Miguel, the monument Porta do Povoamento and the allegorical sculpture of the First Settler, stand out.
