Welcome to the charming Historic Village of Juromenha
House with 58m2 with excellent views over the Guadiana River
Juromenha was the seat of the municipality, extinct in 1836, and the parishes of Juromenha, São Brás dos Matos and Vila Real were part of it, (the latter, since 1801, de facto but not de jure, being located beyond the Guadiana, is administered by Spain, integrating the municipality of Olivença).
The municipality of Juromenha had, in 1801, 823 inhabitants.
The origins of Juromenha are ancient, who occupied the honorable role of sentinel of the Guadiana River, which flows at his feet.
It was conquered from the Moors (then under the name of Julumaniya, which by an improper reading of Arabic was transcribed by some historians as Chelmena) by D. Afonso Henriques, in 1167. It then entered the domains of the Order of Avis, to whom it was donated by King D. Sancho I. It took place some important episodes during the Restoration (seventeenth century) and Peninsular (nineteenth century) wars. It was part of the diocese of Elvas until 1882, when it was extinguished.
For more than two hundred years this site was considered the stronghold of the Badajoz area, belonging since the tenth century to the Caliphate of Córdoba. In 1167 D. Afonso Henriques conquered the fortress, but it would return to the dominion of the Moors in 1191 and would only be definitively reconquered by the Portuguese Crown in 1242. Later, in 1312, King Dinis ordered the total reconstruction of the fortress.
In the post-Restoration period, due to its strategic importance, the medieval fortress was adapted to seventeenth-century artillery, and works were carried out following the plan authored by Eng. Nicolau de Langres. From 1662 and for six years, it was occupied by the troops of King John of Austria, only returning to the possession of the Portuguese Crown in the General Peace of 1668.
With the earthquake of 1755 the fortress was greatly affected, especially the seventeenth-century building area, and was then rebuilt. A fort was also built on the walls next to the Guadiana, to dock the boats. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, during the Peninsular War, it was taken by the army of D. Manuel Godoy, and was only recovered in 1808. Then it progressively fell into decay, being depopulated in 1920. Later, from 1950 onwards, the DGEMN began major recovery works that lasted until 1996.
The fortress, with a polygonal plan, consists of two belts of walls, an internal one, where the keep is located, and an external one, this one of a bastioned type, with a starry plan. In the interior space of the fortress, the churches of Misericórdia and the mother church were built, as well as the old Town Hall and its jail, as well as a rectangular cistern that supplied the population.
Currently, inside the walled enclosure there are the ruins of the two churches, the jail and the old Town Hall. In terms of landscape, the old fortress has a privileged location, with regard to the visual domain of the Portuguese and Spanish territories.
